Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 17, 2026

This policy explains what personal information ferryroute.boats collects, why we collect it, how long we keep it and what you can ask us to do with it. It applies to this website only.

1. Who we are

FerryRoute is an editorial website publishing guides about ferry routes, timetables, fares and boarding procedures. The site is operated by Fabrice Dejean. For any question about this policy or about your personal data, write to [email protected]. For the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR, the operator of this site is the data controller.

2. What information we collect

Information you give us directly: your email address when you subscribe to the weekly route digest, and any details you include when you write to us by email.

Information collected automatically: your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring page, the pages you view and the times you view them. This is standard server log data, the same record any web server keeps.

What we do not collect: we do not ask for payment details, we do not create user accounts, we do not run identity checks and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 16.

3. Cookies and similar technologies

Strictly necessary cookies keep the site working and protect forms against automated abuse. They do not track you across other websites.

Analytics cookies: where analytics is enabled, aggregated statistics about visits and page views are recorded so we can tell which guides are useful. We ask for consent before setting non-essential cookies where the law requires it, and you can withdraw that consent at any time.

Advertising cookies: this site does not run an advertising network and we do not build advertising profiles.

Affiliate cookies: when you follow an outbound link to an operator, a ferry comparison service or a travel insurer, that partner may set its own cookie so that a later booking is credited to this site. Those cookies are set and controlled by the partner, not by us, and they identify the referral rather than you. The partner’s privacy policy governs how that data is used.

4. Affiliate links

Some outbound links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and book, the partner may pay us a commission. This costs you nothing extra. It does not affect our rankings, our scoring or the drawbacks we publish. Affiliate content is labelled where it appears.

5. Newsletter

If you subscribe, we store the email address you provide and use it only to send the digest you asked for. Our lawful basis is your consent. Every message includes an unsubscribe link, and using it removes your address from the list. You can also write to us and ask to be removed manually. We do not sell, rent or share subscriber lists with third parties for their own marketing.

6. Media

Photographs published on this site come from public domain and freely licensed sources, chiefly Wikimedia Commons, or are created by us. Visitors cannot upload images. If you believe an image is credited incorrectly, contact us and we will correct or remove it.

7. Embedded content from other websites

Some articles may embed content from other sites, such as a map or a video. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other site: it may set cookies, collect analytics and track your interaction with it. We have no control over that data. If you prefer to avoid it, do not interact with the embedded element.

8. Who we share data with

We share personal data only where necessary, and only with these categories of processor: our hosting provider, which stores the site and its database; Cloudflare, which provides the content delivery network and security filtering; analytics providers, where analytics is enabled; and affiliate networks, which receive referral identifiers rather than personal details. We may also disclose data where the law requires it, or to establish or defend a legal claim. We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

9. How long we keep data

Subscriber email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Correspondence is kept for up to two years so that we can follow up on a correction. Server logs are kept for approximately 30 days. Analytics data is aggregated and retained for no more than fourteen months. Retention of data held by affiliate partners is set by those partners.

10. Where your data is stored and international transfers

This site is hosted on a server in Los Angeles in the United States, and content is distributed through Cloudflare’s global edge network. If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom or Switzerland, this means your data is transferred outside your region. Where such a transfer happens we rely on appropriate safeguards, including the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses. You can ask us for more detail about those safeguards.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have some or all of the following rights as a data subject: to access the personal data we hold about you; to have inaccurate data corrected; to have your data erased; to restrict or object to processing; to receive your data in a portable format; and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, write to [email protected]. We respond within 30 days. If you are in the EEA or the United Kingdom and you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), California residents may request to know what personal information is collected, request its deletion and request that we do not sell it. We do not sell personal information. To make a request, contact us at the address above; we will verify the request before acting on it.

12. Children

This site is written for adults planning travel. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

13. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, which encrypts the connection between your browser and our server. Access to the server and to subscriber records is restricted. No system can be guaranteed perfectly secure, so we keep the data we hold to the minimum the site actually needs.

14. Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the site changes in a way that affects privacy. The date at the top of the page always shows the most recent revision. Material changes affecting newsletter subscribers are announced by email.

15. Contact

Questions, requests and complaints about privacy go to [email protected]. Please include enough detail for us to identify the data you are asking about.
